Today, September 8, is World Literacy Day. Celebrations will be taking place 
around the world to highlight the importance of literacy. Many of these will be reading. When should parents begin reading to children? New research results show it’s important to begin before a child is even born! No matter the age of the kids in your family, spend a few minutes reading to them today. It doesn’t need to be a story book; it can be the newspaper or something in a magazine. It can be a set of instructions or a recipe.
Of course, stories are always great. Rather than suggest some, I thought I’d share with you my favorite children’s story, Horton Hatches the Egg. I remember taking this home from the school library and reading it to my little sister, but I had to skip over the names of all the places.
