Children need a sense of order to help them cope and feel secure. Some kids have natural talents at creating order and being organized; some are more random and find this quite a challenge. Would you be surprised to know that children who are organized do better at school? Being organized is a learned skill and starting long before school when children are little munchkins really helps. For wee ones, having a place where some things go is a great start. Stuffies go in the hammock, toys in the box, books on the shelf, for example. Instead of nagging kids, remind the toys: Toys, at the end of the day, it sure is nice when you hop yourselves back into the toy box; the floor is much safer that way. For older kidlets, have some practice planning. What’s up this afternoon? Hmm, maybe making a short list will keep things on track. Draw or print 3 of the afternoon’s activities. Show your child how to check them off when done. As easy as that, you have given your child an opportunity to develop a life long strategy and increased the potential for school success, and all without stifling precious creativity!
