Kindergarten readiness evaluations may quite likely ask what your child knows about letters and the alphabet. This is to give some idea of the level of basic knowledge. Children all develop at their own rate and in their own way so some may know all the letters and other children only a few. All children will need to learn the idea that letters have both names and sounds. Lots of time to hear, see and play with letters and sounds will help develop this readiness for kindergarten skill.
Alphabet books are one way to expose children to letters. Magnetic or foam letters, puzzles, blocks, sticks, paints, crayons, etc can all be used to have letter fun. Songs, games, and body shapes are some more suggestions. Your child may want to make the letter P using only 1 kind at a time or mixing them together. Bits of paper, paint dabbers, and stamps are some more ideas. The newspaper had lots of letter p’s, too.
