While good memory skills are important, it’s also important to have good things to remember. Like Saturdays! During the week, there is lots of competition for parents and caregivers time and attention, but Saturdays may have more time for an activity with the kids. The fun and play are important for children’s development in all areas and that helps with readiness for kindergarten.
A special activity with little ones can include going to the park or playground or it can even be something right at home, like snuggling in the big bed for a few minutes with a book, only this time the kids read to the grownups and the grownups “wake up”.
Besides special activities Saturday’s often include the chores that we don’t have time for on workdays. Saturday may be grocery day and shopping trips can be exciting for little ones–although adults may use a very different word for shopping with kids. Doing other chores can be fun, too. The working together can create as many good memories for kids as the playing.
Young children do not remember events from their first few years as much as they will later ones. Nevertheless, what things they do will add to the experiences they have and they learn from these experiences. The more they have will help equip them for kindergarten readiness as their world expands even more to include school.
