Is show and tell one of your child’s highlights? Kids don’t save show n’ tell just for daycare or preschool. They want to tell moms and dads and practically anyone who will listen about what they make with their blocks, the pictures they color, why they have bandaids, exciting news and more. This seems to be especially true if it’s something we’d rather they didn’t talk about, like telling the bank teller how mommy put dry cat food in the soap cup of the dishwasher. (The box of soap and the box of cat food were side by side in the cupboard under the sink.) Of course, as soon as we ask them to tell grandma or grandpa about the special fun they had that day they need lots of prompting to remember.
Having kids share about what they are doing and talk about objects are ways to exercise memory. We can help them with a few clues or questions when needed. This also helps children visualize or create mental pictures and lets them practice explaining. Sequencing, that is putting things in order, is another kindergarten readiness strategy that they practice, along with using lots of language skills.
There will probably be a time today when you can ask your little one to tell you about something. Would you agree that having a show and tell at home is another fun readiness for kindergarten learning activity?
