Kindergarten Readiness: Halloween Learning & Fun – Singing

Counting today, there are just 10 days left before Halloween to sing some simple songs for learning, fun and to help develop your child’s kindergarten readiness. These two songs can have as many verses as you can think of so kids can sing them over and over and over. Just what you want to hear–not.

But songs do help brains with language, learning new words, counting, rhythm, memory, listening, rhyming, and other skills. Some of the tracks that brains develop for music, are also used for math. Music is a system of notes and spaces and math is a system of numbers and spaces. Notes go up and down and numbers go up and down. There are other similarities that make learning math easier for kids who have lots of experience with music. Singing is a wonderful, fun way to include music for kids of all ages. Very young children that are not yet talking enjoy doing actions while others sing to them.

Halloween Tens:

1 little, 2 little, 3 little spooky ghosts,
4 little, 5 little, 6 little spooky ghosts,
7 little, 8 little, 9 little spooky ghosts,
10 little spooky ghosts, BOO!

Change this to be 10 scary witches (EEEE), 10 little skeletons (SHAKE), 10 little jack-o-lanterns (SMILE), 10 little hairy monsters (GROWL) and anything else you can think of.

Trick or Treat Time:

tune: Frere Jacques)

Trick or treat time, trick or treat time.
Who are you? Who are you?
I’m a scary witch, I’m a scary witch.
Halloween, Halloween.

Or: I’m a… spooky ghost, dancing skeleton, smiling jack-o-lantern, roly poly pumpkin, flying princess. For kids that are a bit older and like to be a little scared it could also be great big monster, walking zombie, creepy vampire, rattly robot and again, whatever else can be imagined.

Because singing is a social activity, it also helps kids listen to other people and match their voices. Singing with someone else involves give and take and the music seems to make this so natural. There are lots of other Halloween songs for you and your child to enjoy. What are your favorites?
