Games are a great way to have fun, play with others, and learn at the same time. Here are some action games for colors.
Simon Says is an action game that most kids are familiar with. Instead of instructions to touch your nose, pat your head, or jump three times, kids can give an action with a color word. Simon says touch something red, point to something orange, show another person something purple, and so on. The game can go outside as Simon says put your foot on something green or jump high up into the blue sky or fly like a colorful butterfly.
Both boys and girls can be Simon or Simon can change to be The Monster Says, or Spiderman Says. Kids can choose to be a favorite character in place of Simon or choose a different name altogether. It will work just the same where an instruction is ignored unless the leader uses the words “Simon (or other choice) says” first.
Another game is Red Light, Green Light. This is a good game for lots of kids and a big open space. Kids line up at one end of the space and advance forward on green light, and freeze to a stop on red. It can be adapted for smaller places by using red for stop, and yellow for going slow. Picking up toys can be way more interesting if there is someone to say red light when a child has one foot off the floor. Of course, it’s hard to balance on one foot, so after some giggles and wiggles, kids end up on the floor. Green light can be to get a toy and put it in the toy box until there’s a red light. The toys go in the basket and the child goes on the floor, not the other way around.
I Spy Colors can be played sitting on a bus or waiting in line at the store. With lots of things to see in an area, there’s no danger of running out of colors. What color is the action for your child?
