This game can be called Lumpy Socks. To play, round up a few socks that are not needed. Since no socks are damaged in this game, they can be used temporarily. Then, find a few objects to hide in the socks, such as a plastic spoon, a small plastic cup, a soft sponge, a big eraser, a very small stuffie, a toy car, a wooden block, a metal jar ring, etc. Put one object in each sock. Kids get to figure out what is in each sock only by feeling. Once they have an idea, they can check it out by looking in the sock.
This game helps develop kindergarten readiness on several levels. One is by encouraging children to think something out using theĀ information at hand. What do their fingers tell them about the shape and size? What do they already know that feels like that? What might be some guesses? A second skill is that of checking out what they think. Did they guess what it was? Following the rules of a simple game is a third level. Because there will be rules at kindergarten, it really helps kids if they practice with rules beforehand.
One child can play this game alone. Kids enjoy putting the objects in the socks themselves and trying it again and again. Two or more kids can play together, adding taking turns for another level of learning. The only trick is making sure all objects are taken out of the socks before they are put away. Instead of putting a sock in it, this game is putting it in a sock! And socking away lots of readiness for kindergarten learning, too.
