Do you remember how to play Simon Says? While it’s fun to play this game with 3 or 4 or more little ones, it can be done with one adult and one child. One person gives instructions to the other and the other person follows–as long as the instruction starts Simon Says.
Simon says: Tap your shoulders. Simon says: Bend your knees. Wave goodbye. Oops … didn’t say Simon Says. Younger kids may only be interested in playing this game for a short time, but it can be played over and over, just about anywhere and at anytime. Kids of several different ages can all play at the same time, too. Adapt as needed for your child.
This activity requires careful listening and attention, both good practice for kindergarten readiness. The listener has to pause and remember the instruction to check if the Simon Says cue was given or not, a good exercise for memory. Everybody needs a turn to give the instructions, even toddlers, which is another readiness for kindergarten skill. Plus, it can be good physical exercise. To make the game more fun, use some cues like Simon says put your foot on your tummy, Simon Says make a scary face, Simon says slurp up spaghetti that’s as long as the street, Simon says touch your nose with your elbow. An occasional instruction can be included such as Simon says pick up the toys on the floor but maybe follow it up with Simon says it’s time for a cookie?
