Readiness for Kindergarten – Cooking Up Learning

A news article just announced the top 10 searches on the Internet for last year. Apparently, cooking and recipes made it on that list. Any guesses as to one of the top 10 recipes? Rice Krispie Squares!

Over the holidays, it sure was nice to have a few cookies and other treats, but like the decorations they are gone at my house. It may be time to make a batch, especially as this news item is making me hungry. To add some nutrition to these treats I include some nut butter, sesame and sunflower seeds, and some dried cranberries or raisins.

Cooking with kids can include lots of learning and readiness for kindergarten. When “helping” in the kitchen, there’s creating, planning, organizing, using visual details, measuring, counting, and more. Kids use lots of language skills such as questioning, explaining, and learning specific vocabulary. Often, sequence in a recipe is very important, just like the skill. There’s some basic safety lessons and the responsibility of cleaning up after cooking, too.

Encouraging kindergarten readiness in your little one is not a separate activity, but a part of other ordinary events in your day. What kind of learning will you and your child cook up today?
