The kitchen is the scene of a great deal of Christmas activity and it can also be a great place for kindergarten readiness learning and fun. There are so many different things to make and do in the kitchen, that instead of some specifics, here are some ideas and pictures to spark your creativity, and some of the many possible skills and strategies that kids can learn.
- Recipes are a great way to practice following instructions and doing things in sequence.
- Hands practice different skills like stirring, slicing, mixing, rolling, patting and placing things just right.
- Lots of science happens when cooking, such as observing how things change, understanding how solids and liquids are different, and more.
- All 5 senses are involved not just hearing and sight, but touch, taste, and smell, too.
- There are some social skills such as cooperating, asking questions, give and take, and sharing.
These are just a few of the possible learning opportunities when cooking with kids. Add in some talking and imagining. Kitchen fun also creates memories and exercises remembering. What’s some learning that you can cook up today?
(Special thanks to Jill and helper-chefs at Kitchen fun with my 3 sons for permission to show the following great ideas.)
