Brought to You by the Number 4
May the 4th be with you. The fun with the date is because of the play on words and play on numbers. So today’s play-of-the-day is some number fun. In particular, the number 4.
Four is a gr8t number. There are lots of toys like cars and trucks with 4 wheels. Together, you and your child can count the wheels and see if there are 4. Kids can look in the toy box and find all the toys with 4 wheels. If there is a flat box at home, it could become a special #4 Garage.
Animals have 4 legs. Check a few of them out with your child. Next, kids can go on a quest to round up all the animal toys and stuffies with 4 legs. A laundry basket could be #4 Zoo.
2 and 2 make 4. If your child has 2 feet and you have 2 feet, that makes how many feet? Feet can hop 4 times, jump 4 times, take 4 baby steps, spin 4 times, and stretch for 4 dinosaur steps. Try 4 lunges with paper towel roll lightsabers. Feet can also go outside and run around the yard 4 times.
Instead of going on a bear hunt, a 4 hunt is fun. Kids go all around the house and look for things with 4. Chairs and beds have 4 legs. Are there any tables with 4 legs? There might be a room in the house with 4 windows. While walking around the house kids can pick up 4 things and put them away.
For more number fun, read 4 stories, look at 4 books. What 4 songs can you and your child sing? One of them might be The Wheels on the Bus because buses have 4 wheels.
Did you know we can eat numbers? Apples and oranges can get cut in 4 pieces. Sandwiches can get cut in 4. How about eating 4, er…, how about eating 1 cookie in 4 bites? 4 strawberries are yummy. Are they called forks because they have 4 points?
This number fun will help your child develop the idea of “fourness,” of how much is 4. Children need many, many experiences in everyday and play experiences to figure out what we mean when we say 4. May the number 4 be with your child.
