Weekends, at this time of year, often include some yardwork. While little ones aren’t really much help, when they are included, there are some great learning opportunities. Before raking leaves, let your little ones see that trees lose their leaves at this time of year and that leaves are different colors, sizes and shapes. The playing in the leaves promotes a connection to nature. Here’s a song to encourage lots of different big-muscle movements, too, using the tune of Mulberry Bush.
This is the way we rake the leaves, rake the leaves, rake the leaves.
This is the way we rake the leaves in the yard.
This is the way we make a pile, make a pile, make a pile.
This is the way we make a pile in the yard.
This is the way we jump in the leaves, jump in the leaves, jump in the leaves. This is the way we jump in the leaves in the yard.
This is the way we fill up the bag, fill up the bag, fill up the bag.
This is the way we fill up the bag in the yard.
Science learnings can piggy-back on the fall yardwork. Does knowing that you are helping your little one get ready for kindergarten at the same time make the task less of a chore?
