A Pile of Leaves Equals A Pile of Learning and Fun

Does your weekend include some fall yard work with the kids? There’s a special math formula that only occurs in the fall season: a pile of leaves = a pile of learning. Although they may not be that much help, including the kids adds the aspect of fun.

raking leavesEven if kids have noticed before, it’s still exciting to see all the different shapes, sizes, and colors of leaves. Does your child know that all the leaves on one tree will be the same kind? In order to learn this, kids need to check over and over. The leaves can vary in size and color on one tree, but otherwise they will be the same.

Here’s a song to the tune of Mulberry Bush to sing while raking leaves:

This is the way we rake the leaves, rake the leaves, rake the leaves.
This is the way we rake the leaves… in the yard.

This is the way we make a pile, make a pile, make a pile.
This is the way we make a pile… in the yard.

This is the way we jump in the leaves, jump in the leaves, jump in the leaves.
This is the way we jump in the leaves… in the yard.

This is the way we fill up the bag, fill up the bag, fill up the bag.
This is the way we fill up the bag… in the yard.

Of course, jumping in the pile and throwing leaves at brothers and sisters is the most fun. This involves some social learning.  Some behaviors, such as throwing leaves, are okay, but there are boundaries to actions. Kids need to make sure others are participating and who is part of the game. Kids get to experience working together and, once the yard work is done, share in the feeling of accomplishment. And maybe a cup of hot chocolate with marshmallows as a reward?

Neighborhood Nature Walk for Fall

Every year fall brings the same changes, and even though we know what will happen, it’s still exciting. The leaves turn bright colors, the wind swirls them in the air, the birds cry as they fly south, many outside plants dry and turn brown, and the days get shorter and shorter. But it’s all wonderful.

A walk in the neighborhood will show seasonal changes and if you have lived in the same area for a few years, kids will notice the cycle of these changes. It can be a feast for the senses.

On our fall walk we saw some fall-colored leaves on the trees. Some had already fallen.

We touched some seed pods. They looked kind of like blackberries, but the branches weren’t prickly and pokey.

We smelled some fall flowers but they didn’t have any pretty smell. They were almost the same color as some of the leaves.

We heard some birds in the sky as they flew south for the winter.

When we got home, we ate some applesauce cookies from applesauce we made ourselves. One batch sure disappeared fast. Guess we’ll need to make some more.

(The video below has some of the same things!)

A simple activity like this is easy to forget, but it creates a background that’s a combination of change and sameness. Encouraging a connection to nature is critical for children who will need to create balance in their own lives in not very many more years. No matter the weather where you live, can you and your child go for a walk in the fall?

Apple Adventure For Fun and Learning

Q. Why was the apple tree sad? A. Because it was always getting picked on!

apple fun and learningA friend of ours has an apple tree and the apples are ready to be picked. She invited us over to pick some and it was a highlight of the day. I’m not sure if the tree was happy, but the kids certainly were.  Not very many apples were low enough for them to reach  but they watched the adults using a rake and a hook on a long pole and cheered when we got each apple. They ran around, looked way up, stretched out on the ground so they could see better up high and rolled in the grass. Of course, we got to eat some fresh off the tree.

This was a great hands-on experience and opportunity to see apples on a tree. There was almost as much talking as there was running around. The kids noticed that some apples were bigger and some smaller. Some had lots of red and some only a little. This gave them a chance to practice comparing skills.

There was lots of science and nature, and it seems quite magical that a little tiny seed can grow into a big tree with more apples. Inside these apples are other seeds that could make even more trees. Because so few children have the chance to see food growing and being harvested, it’s hard to understand this life cycle. It’s difficult to develop a connection with what we are buying in the grocery store.

Experiences like these are not possible for every family, but you may have different ones. So much learning can happen for kids in any adventure. There will be lots of language stimulation, and new things to see and remember. Instead of connections with nature, there could be connections with other people. What kind of fun and learning can you harvest for your child today?
