Some Handy Ideas for Kindergarten Readiness: Autumn

Since it’s fall, how about an autumn kindergarten readiness learning and fun activity? In the fall, there are some wonderful nature treasures to touch and collect.

What do trees and leaves feel like in the fall? Careful about touching prickly blackberry bushes, especially that have no more blackberries. Are there some nuts that have fallen, or pinecones on the ground? There may be berries or rosehips on bushes and trees. Any birds on their way south? A walk around your block may not reveal many nature items but you and your child may be able to visit a park or playground.

I have mentioned the book “Last Child in the Woods”  by Richard Louv a few times. He writes that children are at risk of a Nature Deficit Disorder. We know that kids need outside time for physical development but they need to connect to the natural world around them for healthy emotional development, too. Children are also practicing observing and gaining basic science knowledge about what happens in the fall. They are noticing that some things have changed and some things haven’t. fall-adventure

Some of these findings can create lovely nature-inspired art. Now there’s some fall inside, too. What will yours and your child’s hands find on a fall quest?

Some Handy Ideas for Kindergarten Readiness: Talking

Hands that talk are great fun and can be part of  kindergarten readiness learning. Today, hands can say/show about fall. This is an easy one to do:

Signing a few words is another way to stimulate early brain development. As children learn to connect a word and an action, their brains are making connections too. Representing words with actions also helps build pathways that will later be used for learning to read. Can this be part of your action plan for today?

Readiness for Kindergarten – Pumpkin Season

I love turning over the calendar from September to October. The pictures nearly always show brightly colored fall leaves and pumpkins. This weekend I am going to carve out the time to go for a walk and enjoy the seasonal changes. While I may not see pumpkins I’m sure I’ll see some signs of fall.

While connecting to what is happening in the environment can’t exactly be called readiness for kindergarten, observing and talking certainly can be. Going for a walk with your little one to see seasonal changes helps with both. Have the leaves changed color? What’s happening to the grass? In some parts of the country the grass dies and turns brown. In others, the dry grass from hot summer sun turns green with fall rains. What other changes can you see? Are there any changes to smell or hear or feel? We can almost taste autumn.

In addition to practicing observing, there are other kindergarten readiness skills too. Vocabulary, sensory experiences, and basic science are a few more. Awareness and appreciation of nature are lifelong learnings. What do you enjoy best about October 1st?

Kindergarten Readiness – Fall Changes

With all the changes happening around us, it is a good time to talk to kids about just that–change. At this age, change often happens in kids’ lives and it can upset their world. Some practice dealing with small changes can help develop their understanding and resilience. Conversations can start…”Wow,  the leaves sure are changing. … Continue reading Kindergarten Readiness – Fall Changes

Kindergarten Readiness – Nutty About Math

Squirrels are busy animals in the fall. Do squirrels do math? How many nuts have they squirrelled away? Since many of us do not have nut trees in our backyards, we’ll have to pretend that some blocks or duplo or cheerios are nuts to use for counting, adding and subtracting. For quite young “squirrels” it’s enough to work … Continue reading Kindergarten Readiness – Nutty About Math

Kindergarten Readiness – Rake Up A Jack-o-lantern

Weekends, at this time of year, often include some yardwork. While little ones aren’t really much help, when they are included,  there are some great learning opportunities. Before raking leaves, let your little ones see that trees lose their leaves at this time of year and that leaves are different colors, sizes and shapes. The playing in … Continue reading Kindergarten Readiness – Rake Up A Jack-o-lantern

Kindergarten Readiness – 1 Leaf Say To The Other?

What did one autumn leaf say to the other leaf? I’m falling for you! As a change and extension from reading books, it’s important to also tell stories.  Ask your child to choose a fall leaf. Either you or your child can be the voice of the leaf and tell about being on a tree and … Continue reading Kindergarten Readiness – 1 Leaf Say To The Other?
