Colorful, Easy Wreath Kids Can Make for Easter

Last fall, Big Sister made a special wreath for Thanksgiving; just by changing the shape and colors, we made another one for Easter. This simple, easy craft not only looks wonderful and is fun, plus it helps with some early kindergarten readiness skills.

Easter wreath craft for kidsUsing a stiff piece of paper from a cereal box, I traced an egg shape. Because it was so stiff, little hands couldn’t cut it out. Once the outside was cut, I cut out the inside in the same shape, leaving a band about 2 fingers wide. Make sure to leave the outside intact. Instead, poke a hole in the inside and cut from there. Little hands ripped different colors of tissue paper into bits. In the craft box, we had pink, green, yellow, blue, and some wrapping paper that had butterflies and lilac flowers. These were all saved from shoes, stores, and presents. We didn’t need to buy anything! Not very many bits of paper are needed. Once there was a pile, I spread some glue all over and both Big Sister and Little Sister stuck bits of paper around the edge. With a ribbon to hang it up, it was all done.

Easter wreath craft for kidsThis craft was easy enough for both toddlers and preschoolers. Sequencing is a tricky skill. Kids do not always know the order of events. Have you ever heard kids argue about who hit the other person first?” They aren’t sure about the sequence. Crafts are one way of practicing doing things in order, step by step. Picking colors means kids have to make choices. It doesn’t seem like deciding is a skill, but for some children, this can be a challenge. Besides sequencing and choosing, there are the plenty of language skills, such as explaining, expressing oneself, and asking questions. With 2 kids working on 1 wreath, there was sharing, taking turns, and negotiating who would do what.

The very best part, is the pride of kids when they can show what they have created and share with others. Do you have some other great Easter simple, fun ideas?

April Fool’s Fun, Play, and Kindergarten Readiness

Just in case you don’t believe that April Fool’s can help support kindergarten readiness, just think of how many times a sense of humor is important as a life-skill. Besides, who has more sense of fun than kids?

April Fool's fun activity for young kidsIn the spirit of fun, you can tell kids that you have decided to make a dip of mud for snack. They can cut up the fruit, which is especially yummy with mud. Because bananas are soft, they are easy for small hands to slice with a plastic or picnic knife, although they might need a hand slicing crosswise. Grownup hands can slice some apple and orange. Other fruits that kids can help cut are strawberries and grapes. Even if the pieces are too small, kids will want to lick their fingers.

For mud, there are some options. While the kids are busy, you can make some chocolate pudding or mix a little chocolate milk or powder with yogurt. Put some in individual bowls. Once the fruit is ready, bring out the bowls and let the kids dip their fruit in the mud.

chocolate mud dip for kidsDid you know that a sense of humor is actually a complicated series of thinking skills? There are several involved: recognizing intention, realizing something is irregular and understanding symbolism, and the corresponding emotional responses. It is something that kids develop and need to practice.

Playing a trick on someone also requires planning and organizing. Your child needs to predict someone else’s behaviour and reaction. And, of course, there’s the element of imagination. There are social skills involved because the event is shared, helping children bond and form community. These are all kindergarten readiness skills as well as life ones.

There are lots of fun pranks to play on others today, like mixing up shoes, putting a sock (clean, of course) in a lunch kit, putting a pair of daddy’s big socks in their sock drawer, kids can put a pair of their socks in daddy’s drawer, putting sticker eyes on a banana or apple and more. Have fun! What will happen at your house for April Fool’s?

Happy St. Patrick’s Day Fun For Little One’s

Just as one pot can hold many pieces of gold, St. Patrick’s Day has many different ways for kids to have fun. All the fun can help with early development and kindergarten readiness. Here are some ideas to start:

Have a green snack, like guacamole and chips, or green veggies like broccoli and celery with a dilly dip. The Irish love tea, you could invite a friend for a tea party.

Read some stories about St. Patrick’s Day.

Put on some lively music and dance a jig.

Go outside to see what might be green. Some areas may have bits of green where the snow has melted. Are you lucky enough to have an early spring? Warm places have lots of green.

colorsKids can paint a picture with just green, or all the colors of the rainbow.

Bend and twist some green, fuzzy pipe cleaners into all kinds of different shapes.

Go to the park and pretend the slide is a rainbow. The pot of gold at the end of the rainbow could be a great big hug.

These are a few suggestions for things to do. Not all of them will appeal to or be appropriate for all kids. Leprechauns are amazingly creative and love to play. As children play, they are learning more about themselves and the world around them. No matter what the day, that’s worth celebrating. What will you do for fun today?
