In this brand new year, will your child be starting kindergarten? Are you asking, “Will my child be ready for kindergarten?” “What is kindergarten readiness anyway?” Could you use some answers?
This is a series of posts that looks at some of the basics of getting your child ready to start kindergarten. Does your child have a connection to nature?

developing kindergarten readinessKindergarten readiness is so much more than academics. A very real and growing concern is the lack of a connection to nature that impacts learning, development and well-being. This quote from the Center for Families, Communities, Schools and Children’s Learning seems to sum up the message: “Children learn best through their everyday experiences with the people they love and trust, and when the learning is fun. And the best place for these experiences is outdoors, in the natural world.”

Some general knowledge about nature is that it is a cycle. Children can often connect with trees in their neighborhood to watch this cyclical change. Even urban areas have pockets of natures that children can explore with parents and caregivers to connect with nature. We don’t need to be naturalists to share some important basic nature knowledge with kids.

Richard Louv, author of Last Child In The Woods, says that “The future will belong to the nature-smart—those individuals, families, businesses, and political leaders who develop a deeper understanding of…the natural world and who balance the virtual with the real. The more high-tech we become, the more nature we need.” He attributes some alarming childhood trends to a “nature-deficit.” One of the solutions is to support opportunities for children to connect with nature.

Kids need time outside to play and nurture their sense of wonder. Does your child have time to connect to nature?

This is a series of posts that looks at some of the basics of getting your child ready to start kindergarten. Does your child know it’s okay to ask for help?

helping kids start kindergartenAn often overlooked concern for preparing children for preschool or kindergarten is reassuring kids that it is OK to ask for help. We would take it for granted that, at 3 or 4 or 5 years old, a child would be comfortable telling a teacher that he or she needs help, but that is not always the case. While at home, kids seem to call on mom or dad easily, but at school some children are reluctant to say they don’t know how to do something, or where something is, or tell somebody that something unexpected is happening.

Letting your child know that it is okay to ask for help can be as simple as saying, “Did you know that at school, since mommy or daddy aren’t there you can ask your teachers for help?” If your child seems hesitant, you may have to pretend to be the teacher and have your child practice a few times. Or you can pretend and using a child-like voice ask a few silly and not so silly questions that your child gets to answer, “Could you tell me if there are any chocolate monsters in the hallway?” Or, “I can’t reach the light in the bathroom. Could somebody reach it for me?” Kids may be afraid they would be in trouble and reluctant to tell the teacher that they spilled the paint, or their snack, or had an accident.

It is also important that children know if they feel sick, they need to tell the teachers. Every time a child tells a teacher his or her tummy hurts the teacher may not call you at home or work. Sometimes, the tummy ache might be because of a concern in class, such as a friend is sitting beside somebody else but it helps the teachers to know if somebody doesn’t feel very good.

Again, this is not an academic issue, but it is a very basic part of kindergarten readiness. Are there other non-academic concerns that you can suggest?

You don’t need to do this on your own. You too can ask for help from me and other parents and caregivers in the community: https://www.facebook.com/123Kindergarten

This is a series of posts that looks at some of the basics of getting your child ready to start kindergarten. For children’s safety and well-being, they need to have some general knowledge about health and bodies.

boys-608x404 helping kids get ready for schoolWe are all aware that life is far more complicated for children now than ever before, and that includes kindergarten. An early concern for young children is the correct names for all body parts. Children also need to understand that all body parts are equally special, including the private parts of the body, that is those that are covered by underwear or a bathing suit. Once children begin to have an understanding about privacy, we can talk to them about private spaces and public spaces.

girls-608x404 helping kids get ready for schoolBefore children go to school, it is important that parents and caregivers have given children some basic information about reproduction. Where babies come from is a common question for preschoolers. To help protect children from child-abuse, you can use the words of safe touch, unsafe touch and secret touch. Safe touch can be good: such as hugs, bouncing, holding hands, washing and wiping, or bad: like pulling out slivers and getting stitches. Unsafe touch includes hitting, kicking, biting, scratching, etc and children know that this kind of touching hurts others. Secret touch or private touch is for adults only. If parents have discussed this with young children they have a better understanding of boundaries and have the words to tell their parents and teachers if there are any problems.

For children’s safety and well-being these are important issues to address at home before children come to school. It’s much better for parents to provide this information to children than let them hear it from someone else. Plus, this establishes the parent as the “go-to person” for the child. Kindergarten readiness includes so much more than academics, doesn’t it?
