Kindergarten Readiness Fun & Learning Fall Activity #4

Squares have 4 sides, so this fall activity for some kindergarten readiness learning and fun is about squares and other shapes. The inspiration for a play-of-the-day about shapes came from a brand new book called Pick a Circle, Gather Squares: A Fall Harvest of Shapes by Felicia Sanzari Chernesky and Susan Swan. In the story, a family goes to a pumpkin patch and sees all kinds of shapes. Either at a pumpkin patch or right around home, there are lots of shapes to be found.

Pumpkins have a round shape, and so do pumpkin pies. A slice of pie is a triangle. This scarecrow has a triangle hat with a diamond on it. The basket has tiny squares and skinny rectangles. Outside, the compost is a square, like the top of the planter. One drain is a circle and the other is a rectangle. This driveway is all rectangles.

Many days, the family to-do list is longer than the time needed. But learning like this can happen while getting a meal ready or walking to the bus. Not all children will be able to correctly name the shapes, but they will hear the words and begin to sort them out. While looking for shapes, kids will be observing other objects around them. A few minutes one day, added up with a few more another day, and soon your child will find shapes where you hadn’t even noticed them. What shapes can you and your child find?

Kindergarten Readiness: Connecting to New Adventures

developing kindergarten readiness and self-confidenceWhile this is a wonderful new adventure, courtesy of his big sister, I’d be exactly like his mom who said it nearly gave her a heart attack. There are other new adventures and experiences for kids and parents, maybe not as exciting as this one is though, for fun, learning and developing kindergarten readiness.

When kids go off to preschool or kindergarten, not all of it will be new experiences, but certainly some of time will be unfamiliar for your child. To help kids cope with the unexpected they need to have some practice. Having new adventures and challenges before they get to school will build children’s self-confidence. There will be much that is new later on and kids need to feel capable of coping, just like they have done before. Can you imagine the confidence this young boy will feel when he finds himself in a new situation? While he looks nervous and anxious, could there also be a bit of enjoyment? I’ll bet he’s told lots of family and friends about it! I’m not sure about you, but I think I’d maybe pass on this experience…

We can think of confidence as a skill, like learning to cut or color. Rather than using hand and finger muscles, confidence uses some mental and feeling ‘muscles’. Exercise and practice are for more than just bodies. Personally, I think I’ll skip this one but for a play-of-the-day today, can you and your child have a new adventure?

Kindergarten Readiness: Routines Help Kids Connect

Today, as I watched some brand new kindergarten kids, I was reminded of the importance of routines and how they can help kindergarten readiness. For both drop-off and pick-up times, the kids lined up along the wall and waited for either their teacher or their parents. Not only were the parents there, but there were little brothers and sisters and some day-care teachers and babysitters. That’s a lot of people and even though the kids were looking all around, they couldn’t see their parents. But the kids stayed close to the wall and waited. it can be scary all alone but they knew the routine and felt secure. Sometimes, ‘routine’ can seem like a bad word, but for these young children, routine was a sort of school security blanket. developing kindergarten readinessEarlier this week, another radio show host contacted me to be a guest on his show. I felt much less nervous because I know what to expect and how the equipment works. I have a routine of getting a cup of water, starting my laptop, turning off my phone, and plugging in the headset. I’m familiar with the time per segment and know when to expect the breaks. It’s the same for kids. In so much that’s new and being done for the first time, they feel relieved to have some clues about what’s coming next and what to do. Routines give clues.

LearnAndPlayWithMrsA-smllFor a play-of-the-day today, have some fun with routines. Get all mixed up and let the kids “correct” you. For instance, you could tell the kids to brush their teeth and get ready for bed after breakfast. Pause as you are doing something and see if the kids know what comes next. Let your child tell you what to do. But no having dessert first! How does the routine go at your house or care center?
