Kindergarten Readiness

Readiness for Kindergarten – B is for Backpack

For a whole month I haven’t posted about words and sounds. For those of you who check-in regularly, you’ll know that one of the consistent suggestions for kindergarten readiness activities is to play word games with little ones. Why do I mention this so often? Because the understanding that words are made up of sound pieces or bits is such a very important skill for later learning to read. It’s called phonological awareness and, like other readiness for kindergarten skills, develops from play–in this case language play.

For instance, back starts with a ‘buh’ sound. What else starts with ‘buh’? Bake, ball, bug, bear, broccoli, basket, beep, and berry. As you and your little one get a backpack ready for going out, you can just suggest some words that start like back and list them off. If your child is a little older you can ask you if back and berry start the same. Try some more that are the same and some that are different: back and red or back and carrot. Some kids may be able to think of words themselves.

Not all children will have developed this concept before school but all of them can benefit from lots and lots of exposure to language and playing with language just as they play with toys. Backpack is for learning. What other kindergarten readiness activities can you suggest for backpacks?

Readiness for Kindergarten – Have a Backpack Adventure

Did you know that more than 80% of families now live in urban areas? Ensuring that our children develop a connection to nature is more important than ever. Whether it’s a city park or wilderness area there are many things to explore and discover and much to see and wonder about. Kids and green go together. Strap on the backpack and head out for some nature adventure.

In addition to appreciating nature, there are such kindergarten readiness skills as observing, categorizing, listening, expanding vocabulary and more. Ask your child what things does s/he see, hear, smell and feel? What kind of colors and shapes are there? In this patch, what things are growing?

By attaching learning on to kids’ enthusiasm and natural curiosity we make it fun and meaningful and promote readiness for kindergarten and a deep connection to the natural world. What kind of learning do you see?

Readiness for Kindergarten – Sing a Song for Backpacks

I’m always amazed at the resources I find when searching on the web. I had no idea there were so many songs and videos about backpacks. Singing is a wonderful  readiness for kindergarten activity. It helps to develop auditory discrimination and memory, vocabulary, rhythm, rhyming, language fluency, listening skills, social skills, basic concepts, and that’s only a few. While there are appealing kids’ artists and great CD’s some of the best songs are the ones that kids and parents/caregivers make up as they go along. For instance, here are a few verses using the familiar tune Here We Go ‘Round The Mulberry Bush:

This is the way we open the backpack, open the backpack, open the backpack.
This is the way we open the backpack, and get ready to go.

This is the way we put stuff in, put stuff in, put stuff in.
This is the way we put stuff in, and get ready to go.

This is the way we close the backpack, close the backpack, close the backpack.
This is the way we close the backpack, and get ready to go.

When loading the backpack, sing about each item: This is the way we put in a hat, put in a hat, put in a hat, etc. This may even help kids with getting ready to go which is much more than kindergarten readiness. This is the way we put in some learning….

September 8 is World Literacy Day. According to UNESCO while literacy is still a major concern around the world it is also a reason to celebrate because nearly 4 billion people are literate. Readiness for Kindergarten – Backpacks Count

More accurately, it’s the kids and grownups that do the counting. Counting is a kindergarten readiness skill but because children develop at different rates some will count higher than others. In yesterday’s blog post I explained that counting is a math skill that children develop at an early age. In order for them to count … Continue reading Readiness for Kindergarten – Backpacks Count

Readiness for Kindergarten – Backpacks For Math

Kindergarten readiness skills build on children’s early experiences. Lots of variety helps build this foundation for later learning. As well, a great deal of repetition is needed, too. For children to develop an understanding of numbers, they first need to learn that one number goes with one thing. Usually, one person only carries one backpack at … Continue reading Readiness for Kindergarten – Backpacks For Math

Readiness for Kindergarten – Backpacks for Color Learning

While some backpack colors are certainly more popular than others, any color can help when it comes to kindergarten readiness learning. Learning colors is not easy for young toddlers. Without shape or size colors are an abstract concept. We can’t feel them, buy them or even describe them without referring to something else. Many different … Continue reading Readiness for Kindergarten – Backpacks for Color Learning

Readiness for Kindergarten – Learning Goes in Backpacks

Just in case we didn’t know it’s back to school, the number of newspaper flyers and other ads would certainly clue us in. A favorite item to purchase this time of year is a new backpack. Even if little ones are not yet starting school, a backpack is handy for preschool or daycare, taking a … Continue reading Readiness for Kindergarten – Learning Goes in Backpacks

Readiness for Kindergarten – Celebrate, Children At Play

I saw this great sign on a blog called “preschool daze”. Kristin had taken the sign Caution Children At Play and changed it to Celebrate Children At Play. It must be something in the air because my post yesterday was all about learning kindergarten readiness social skills by celebrating with others. The idea of today’s … Continue reading Readiness for Kindergarten – Celebrate, Children At Play

Readiness for Kindergarten – Happy New School Year

Some schools have already started their new year, but September 1 seems to be the official beginning of school. The best way to start something new is with a celebration. At celebration get-togethers children learn about socially acceptable behaviour in a group. This is more than just kindergarten readiness.  The classroom can be overwhelming with so many other people … Continue reading Readiness for Kindergarten – Happy New School Year
