Kindergarten Readiness

Readiness for Learning – January is One, 4 Number Fun

Keyboards have numbers...

Since it’s a new year and January is month number one, it’s time for some number fun. For children, number sense develops gradually and kids need many experiences with numbers to build important brain connections. Many number opportunities occur naturally in a day and will give your child experience with numbers: time to get up in the morning, counting the buttons on a shirt, how many slices of banana on breakfast cereal, the number of baby carrots tucked in a snack, clicking all the buckles on the car seat, the number of kids at daycare, catching the bus with the right number, leaving a new phone number, and there are undoubtedly more!

Counting and talking about numbers with your child will help encourage development of number sense–and readiness for kindergarten, too. Kindergarten just builds and extends on what kids are already learning at home. Early experiences count, pardon the pun. Can you make your day count with some number learning fun with your little one?

Readiness for Kindergarten – Explore and Discover

One of the news items circulating recently on the Internet talks about the discovery of Ghost Octopus and Yeti Crabs in the Antarctic. The scientists were “thrilled”, “amazed”, and “absolutely stunned.”

These comments reminded me what it’s like for kids when they discover something. But they don’t need to go all the way to the Antarctic, they can explore at home. Sometimes, there’s strange creatures lurking right under the bed! Dust bunnies are proof of that. Outside is almost another world, backyards, neighborhood parks or just along the street.

Early in the morning, there might be a squirrel sunning himself in the backyard.

The park may have trees with berries.

But even a dead, dried flower is worth exploring

and a leaf on the ground, left over from fall, is a discovery.

Observing is an important skill for kindergarten readiness; a meaningful connection to nature is a gift. What can you discover and explore with your child?

Readiness for Kindergarten – And the word today is learning!

An inspirational site for the new year asked us to choose a word for 2012. That was easy for me…learning!

But better than 1 word is many. Would you believe more than 40 million many? That’s how many words a child has heard in the early years before going to school! More than 40 million words, isn’t that astounding? As the brain hears these all these words, it makes vast connections to figure out the order that words go in, what they mean, how they change when used with other words, the rules of the game and more. Words are really important for language development and kindergarten readiness. What are some of the ways we can include words and learning with kids?

  • Share books, lots and lots of books. Have Grandma Skype and she can read some.
  • Tell stories. We can remember a few that we heard like The 3 Little Pigs, Puss in Boots, and other traditional ones, but make up stories too with your little ones. “Once upon a time, the bus grew wings and …
  • Recite nursery rhymes, and change the words sometimes.
  • Sing, sing, sing. Make up your own songs to easy tunes. Listen to songs, too.
  • Talk with kids anytime. When it’s time to get dressed, talk to the socks. Making the bed needs some conversation, too: “Okay, pillow, you get to lie here nice and quiet and wait for bedtime. No hiding under the bed just under the covers.” Use voices for the fork and spoon at the table. Tell the shoes that they need to stay out of the mud unless they are boots.
  • Let kids hear grown-ups talking to each other. How else will they learn b i g words?

When it comes to readiness for kindergarten, language is significant. If words were pennies, think of them as deposits in your child’s brain bank account. And it can hold lots. Are you enriching your child’s word account?

Readiness for Kindergarten – Cooking Up Learning

A news article just announced the top 10 searches on the Internet for last year. Apparently, cooking and recipes made it on that list. Any guesses as to one of the top 10 recipes? Readiness for Kindergarten – Sticker Fun For Learning

When you have both an unlimited supply of kids and an unlimited budget for stickers…you end up with this! From: https://www.thisiscolossal.com/2012/01/yayoi-kusama-obiliteration-room/ I can’t understand why adults don’t get as excited about stickers as kids do. That’s a big reason why I don’t use my cell phone for lists of info–there’s no way to add stickers. … Continue reading Readiness for Kindergarten – Sticker Fun For Learning

Readiness for Kindergarten – Dragons and Ducks

No, that isn’t the name of a new video game. 2012 is the year of the Dragon. I found an incredible children’s mural called “The Dragon’s Magical Bath of Learning”. That’s the best way for kids to learn–immersing them in learning. Each day include some learning time in regular, ordinary activities, adding some fun and … Continue reading Readiness for Kindergarten – Dragons and Ducks

Start of a new week in the new year. Readiness for Kindergarten – Happy New Learning Year

I just watched an incredible TED video on when learning begins. The whole topic of children and learning has important implications regarding readiness for kindergarten. While the video did not have any direct suggestions for how to maximize learning to enhance kindergarten readiness I loved something that Annie Murphy Paul stated, “Learning is one of life’s most … Continue reading Readiness for Kindergarten – Happy New Learning Year

Readiness for Kindergarten – New Year’s Eve Rhythm (& noise)

Music and rhythm activities stimulate all kinds of brain connections and that helps develop readiness for kindergarten. New Year’s Eve is the perfect time to make noise…er, I mean music…to make music and explore different rhythms. The kitchen has lots of treasures for creating instruments. Little ones like things they can shake or drum. A wooden spoon banging on … Continue reading Readiness for Kindergarten – New Year’s Eve Rhythm (& noise)

Readiness for Kindergarten – Tidy-Up Time at Christmas

While I don’t usually take down the Christmas tree this early, last night it fell over and decorations flew all over the room. Thank heavens that’s never happened before. My husband said it was all because it was a wild tree and was trying to escape. I didn’t feel much better but Lee giggled. However, … Continue reading Readiness for Kindergarten – Tidy-Up Time at Christmas
