Kindergarten Readiness: Ripping Paper Science & Art

Yesterday, for some kindergarten readiness fun and learning with hands-on activities, I interviewed MaryAnn F. Kohl on Learn and Play with Mrs. A. She is an artist with 20+ books on kids and hands-on activities, speaker, toy consultant, columnist, publisher and has appeared on several tv shows. Her focus is on the experience, not the final product and she combines science, math, nature, stories, and art, because kids do not learn by subject, but by doing.

developing kindergarten readinessFor older kids, one of MaryAnn’s favorite activities is making a baking soda and vinegar volcano. (see her recipe in the comment on yesterday’s post) For much younger kids, she suggested letting them rip up paper. For babies, just ripping the paper is enough. (Have you seen any of the videos of babies laughing hysterically at the sound of ripping paper?) As kids get a little older they can glue the bits of ripped paper onto another paper or cardboard to make a collage or picture.

As kids rip paper, they are learning about change. After many experiences, kids also learn that this change can not be undone. Even gluing won’t put the paper back together in the same way.  When kids do get to school, they learn that this is an example of a  non-reversible physical change. Did you know that ripping paper, besides being lots of fun, could be such an advanced level of science learning?

Kindergarten Readiness: Conversations with Guest Experts #10

For each radio show on Learn and Play with Mrs A, I take notes because I’m learning so much about kids and kindergarten readiness from fascinating guests who are experts in a variety of areas. Each of them is passionate about kids and loves the work, or maybe that’s play? Here’s a play-of-the-day suggested from our play-of-the-week conversations and a little information about these awesome guests.

yoga for kidsWhen a recent radio show guest talked about kids and yoga, I shared the story of a young mom who was going out to yoga and her 3-year old daughter asked if she would see Darth Vader. While Yoda won’t be there, yoga can be exciting and imaginative for kids. Parent and instructor AJ Aiken shared how yoga can also help kids develop focus, flexibility, balance, confidence, awareness, and other skills, important for kindergarten readiness and beyond.

For a play-of-the-day, try some yoga poses with your child. AJ suggested some great resources, such as the story Daddy is a Pretzel by Baron Baptiste. There are yoga cards, posters, games, dvds, youtube videos and many websites, as well. Here is the link for the podcast on kids and yoga and a 3 minute video with 3 yoga poses, a cat, dog, and lion, complete with stuffies.

Emotional resilience is a skill that children will need far beyond kindergarten but the years between birth and when kids start school are an important time for emotional development. Lorelie Rozanno is a family counsellor, foster parent, and author of Gracie’s Secret. During a conversation with her about helping children learn about emotions she talked about ways to support children’s emotional development. Adults often talk to kids about “feeling good” and “feeling bad”. It’s very important not to label any feelings or emotions as bad, in case children then think that these feelings are wrong. When we ask a child something like “Do you feel bad because your toy broke?” the child may think that the feelings of disappointment, frustration, anger, and sadness, are also bad/wrong. Feelings can be comfortable or uncomfortable but all of them are good.

valentine-facesA play-of-the-day inspired by Lorelie to help young children learn about emotions is to listen and watch how your child is feeling and to label those emotions. There are over dozens and dozens of words that children can learn so they can tell us how they are feeling. It’s hard for them to do this if they don’t have the words. Here is a heart page to name some feeling words. Which one(s) are you and your little one feeling today?
