Readiness for Kindergarten and Hockey?

With the start of the finals for the Stanley Cup, hockey is a topic of discussion in many places–but preschool, too? Apparently! I will admit I hadn’t thought of hockey as learning tool for little ones but this parent said that her son learned numbers from hockey jerseys!

Well, kids learn in lots of different ways.  In this case, the child was very motivated from something in his experience and built his learning on that. To help your little one with kindergarten readiness use whatever is important in the child’s world. Readiness for kindergarten does not come from workbooks and flashcards but from ordinary, everyday living. Score another one for kindergarten readiness!

Readiness for Kindergarten – Jump for June

Jumping is not just for June, it’s for bones! Children’s skeletons are still growing and jumping strengthens bones. While the heart has a pump to circulate the blood, the lymph system doesn’t have one. Exercise and moving is what keeps the lymphatic fluid flowing and this plays a critical role in our immune system. So, for kids to stay healthy and grow strong bones they need to jump around. Knowing all that, makes it a bit easier to cope with all the energy that kids seem to have. It’s for healthy growth and development.

Besides jumping, try hopping, skipping, jumping on one foot and then the other. Jump high, jump low, jump all around, jump in and out. Readiness for kindergarten doesn’t only focus on academics. Physical growth and development is part of the kindergarten readiness package, too.  Of course, jump where it’s safe and at the end of the day, ju…st crawl into bed. You can use fingers to tell or sing the story of the :

5 little monkeys jumping on the bed, 1 fell off and broke his head.
Momma called the doctor and the doctor said….June is for jumping.

Readiness for Kindergarten – Rhyme Away May

Today, is the last day of May. Hey, that all rhymes. What else rhymes with may? May–stay, play, hay, lay, pay, ray, way, etc. We’re having a ton of  fun, Hon.

For over a month, I haven’t mentioned rhyming words as an important kindergarten readiness skill, so I can be forgiven for bringing it up again. Being able to rhyme words indicates that children can hear and separate words into sound bits. Once kids can do that, they figure out that words are like sound puzzles and they can change the bits and get new words. This is so critical for later learning to read that readiness for reading corresponds to the ability to rhyme. (It’s called phonological awareness.)

Stories that rhyme, word games, poems, and songs are some materials that you can use to help your child develop awareness of rhyming words. They all help to make this readiness for kindergarten easy, peasy, lemon squeezy.

Kindergarten Readiness – Country Starts With Kids

In an earlier blog this week I talked about the importance of bonding and connecting to others. In kindergarten, there are increased demands on kids socially and emotionally just because they are part of a new group. Helping kids practice in groups, such as playschools, parent and kids groups, etc. also helps them develop this … Continue reading Kindergarten Readiness – Country Starts With Kids

Readiness for Kindergarten – Memorial Weekend for Kids

Even though Memorial Day is Monday, there are many activities all around the country that happen today. Some of these activities have a serious tone, some are playful. When we stop to think about it, that’s rather important.  After all, a healthy situation needs balance: work/play, happy/sad, etc. There are many lessons that we want … Continue reading Readiness for Kindergarten – Memorial Weekend for Kids

Readiness for Kindergarten – Cooking With Kids

Ideas for play and learning with water took a recess for a couple of days but are back just in time for the weekend. Water play is a great way to build kindergarten readiness skills. Earlier blogs have touched on vocabulary, physical coordination and development, problem solving, observing, premath skills, and more. This is a science … Continue reading Readiness for Kindergarten – Cooking With Kids

Kindergarten Readiness & College, Too

A Facebook reader saw my blog yesterday comparing kindergarten readiness and college readiness and sent me a link to a CNN article on the same topic. (Dec. 29, Want to get your kids into college? Let them play.) The article mentions some of the similar concerns for undergrads as for little ones: impulse control, separation anxiety, and … Continue reading Kindergarten Readiness & College, Too

Kindergarten Readiness and College Readiness?

Listening to the radio on the way to school this morning, I heard the host interviewing a guest who helps secondary students get ready for college. While some of the advice included how to access financial assistance and how to apply to various institutions, there was also tips for the same areas as on a kindergarten readiness checklist! I could hardly wait … Continue reading Kindergarten Readiness and College Readiness?
