How to Celebrate World Read Aloud Day with Kids

To celebrate World Read Aloud Day, grab a book, invite a kid or two to your lap, and read.WRAD

Here’s a poem in the style of Dr. Seuss for inspiration:

TAKE IT AWAY, WORLD READ ALOUD DAY

Today, around the world, for all
Will you hear this reading call?
Will you read aloud today?
This is World Read Aloud Day!

Any favorite story or book,
New or old, take a look,
Then say the words so we can hear,
Say them, say them, loud and clear.

In a car or on a boat,
In pajamas or a coat,
On the sofa or in bed,
Say aloud the words instead.

Should you? Could you? Yes, of course.
Read aloud with lots of force.
Do not mumble neither grumble,
Whisper softly, barely speak.
Let’s read aloud in any place,
Oh yes, even outer space.

Far and near, up and down.
On the farm, and in the town.
We are reading to each other,
We are reading all together.

This is World Read Aloud Day.
Enjoy the sound of the voice,
Reading from a book of choice.
No, not one, but oh so many,

Lots and lots, we shall read plenty.
Poem and story, yarn and tale.
We’ll read aloud; we will not fail.

On a face, do you see the smile?
Come and listen for a while.
Stay right here and give your ear.
Read Aloud Day is full of cheer!

February Friendship #6: Kids Can Be Friends with Art Tools, Toys, and Other Materials

Not all children enjoy art activities, but kids can be friends with art tools and toys, things like crayons, chalk, play dough, paper, scissors, glue and even chocolate pudding. That’s not an art tool, you say? Certainly it isn’t usually, but every now and then, it can be.

kids friends art tools

Not all kids like drawing with crayons and paper, but art is so much more than that. It’s creating with hands-on. Practically anything can be tools and toys. Play dough invites kids to squish, pat, roll, smoosh, squeeze, and sculpt, and then do it again. This is art at play. Play dough is really easy to cut for some practice with scissors. Chalk turns a sidewalk, driveway, fence, patio, or deck into a canvas for expressing the self in lines, colors, pictures, and scribbles. What do you think this child is saying with this long row of balloons?spring sidewalk chalk art

A stick and a beach are also art tools. Washing art work/play off walls isn’t easy, or is it? Let kids draw with soap crayons in the bath. Squirt bottles with colored water are a way to turn snow into rainbows. Just fill the bottle with water, food coloring, and send kids dressed for the weather outside to squirt the white stuff. Soap bubbles + color = art fun and play. soap sensory play

Now, for the pudding, just in case you didn’t get enough chocolate on Valentine’s Day. (You can also use chocolate crumbs in plain pudding if you have extra chocolate treats. ) Find the biggest plastic plate or even shallow container in the cupboard. Wash hands and together mix up the pudding. Spoon a handful onto the plate or inside the container and let your child fingerpaint. Licks are allowed since hands were washed and kids can draw, paint, and create over and over.chocolate pudding for art

Adults forget that kids can create with anything from toys to household objects to nature items. When we remember that it’s much easier so kids can be friends with art tools, toys, and other materials. What sort of art play can be part of your child’s day?

For Kids the Best Valentine is Together Play Time

To a child, love is spelled T.I.M. E. For kids, the best valentine is together play time. Today’s play-of-the-day is suggestions for doing just that.

best valentine is together play time

At the very start of the day, even before breakfast, how about a pajama snuggle. If the day isn’t too rushed, instead of a bedtime story, find a favorite book for a wake-up story. Once in the kitchen, is there a way to do some cooking together? Kids can sprinkle a few red berries on cereal for everyone, or make a yogurt and granola surprise to put on the breakfast table.

Find all the red tools to draw with. These can be crayons, markers, ballpoint pens, pencil crayons, and whatever else you may have. Set out a big piece of paper and let each person draw and color. Even if everybody is doing something different, the various red colors will show up all over the paper and it will look connected.

Dress for the weather and spend some time outside. This could be as simple as a walk, or some time in a neighborhood playground or kicking a ball in the yard. A local park is another possibility for some outside together play time.

Got any puzzles with lots of pieces? Putting a puzzle together is another together activity. If there isn’t enough room for everybody around the table, spread the pieces and the bodies out on the floor for more space.

Speaking of the floor, can you push some of the furniture out of the way and clear a space for dancing? Maybe each person could choose a favorite song to dance to. Try a dance moves video for more movin’ and groovin’ play. Add voices to the fun by singing too.
