T I M E and Chinese New Year Fun for Kids

Chinese New Year Gift for a Child

Chinese New Year is a bright, exciting event to liven up and lighten up winter. Celebrating with kids is another way to spend love and time with them. (This could be another post in the series To a Child, Love is Spelled T I M E.)

Chinese New Year is being celebrated around the world. In our community, it is combined with the Scottish tradition of Robbie Burns Day as a multi-cultural event with both a haggis and a lion in the parade. However it happens, having families participate together is a big part of it.

chinese -new-year-for-kidsYour family might want to do some crafts together, like make Chinese lanterns, check out how to print names in Chinese characters, turn an egg carton into a dragon, color and fold a fan, or make a 2-sided drum. Another option is to have a parade with plastic container drums, noisy shakers with small items in a tin, and a long banner of fabric to swirl as you dance along. Wear your best lion faces along with some dress-up clothes or red pants and tops.

Is there a parade to watch in your community? Will there be music and a lion dance? Are there special foods to taste? With night still coming early, it might be possible to see some fireworks without having to stay up too late and needing a nap the next day–for the grownups!

im-waiting-for-you-pdpSpending time with kids at an event creates memories and ties. It becomes a shared experience and unique for each family. In Asian cultures, there is an emphasis on the importance of the family unit and it includes grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins of cousins. When a family gets together, it’s a big group! In the spirit of Chinese New Year, you can do something with the family. Whether or not you exchange gifts in red envelopes isn’t important. Perhaps, you could share the gift of love wrapped up with time?

Story Play-of-the Day

Today’s play-of-the-day is about one of my favorite activities: story telling. In the United States it’s Presidents’ Day, in some parts of Canada it’s Family Day. Story telling is great for both places and everywhere else in the world.

Presidents' Day for kidsA famous story about George Washington is the one about cutting down the cherry tree. It’s often told to children to encourage them to be honest.

Presidents' Day for kids

Abraham Lincoln was renowned as a story-teller, one of the best in the nation. His stories often poked fun at himself and he used the power of stories and humor to great advantage.

In both cases, stories are effective and enduring. In a quote from Psychology Today “Telling stories is the best way to teach, persuade, and even understand ourselves.” Stories link us to each other and to history.

To celebrate the day, no matter where on the planet your family is, enjoy some story time together. You do not need to look for a book, you can make up a story. In case your imagination needs a little help, randomly find any two objects that are at hand. They might be two things on the table, such as a spoon and piece of paper. Using the familiar pattern of a problem to solve, maybe the spoon wants to say something and is trying to write but the words don’t show up. The paper tells the spoon it needs to be a pen because pens have ink. The spoon uses some juice for ink and writes Hello. Anything can be used in a story.

Presidents' Day for kidsKids love to think of stories and will sort of use the structure of a beginning, a middle, and an end. Their stories may have a problem and solution. Sometimes the stories are so elaborate that the beginning doesn’t connect to the end, but the parts are there. Imagination makes use of dinosaurs or fairies, talking animals or super heroes.

What stories can you and your child tell today?

Best Way to Spend Valentine’s Day: Together

What is the best way to spend Valentine’s Day? That’s easy to answer. The best way is together and there are lots of ways to do just that!

valentine pancake for kidsFamilies will have different ways to enjoy Valentine’s Day. It might start with a special breakfast at home or somewhere else. That could be the appetizer followed by an adventure as the main course. How about going skating or swimming? Some families might have to shovel the driveway—again!—while others mow the lawn. For a treat, add a few cinnamon hearts to the hot chocolate or some heart-shaped ice cubes to the lemonade.

valentine nature fun with kidsA double feature could be spending time together and spending time in nature. How about a hike or play in the yard or park? That could happen in just about any weather except stormy as long as everyone is dressed for it. Valentine picnic anyone?

valentine's day fun with kidsMaking and leaving Valentine’s for each other is a great way to have fun. Got any heart-shaped sticky notes? Or, grownup hands can cut out some hearts and little hands can color them. When kids help with chores, like making the bed or unloading the dishwasher, they can leave a little heart.

valentine's day fun with kidsPlay time might be building with blocks, setting up the train, cuddling dolls and stuffies, or dressing up with articles in the tickle trunk. Can you make a blanket fort big enough for the whole family? Take some chalk and color some hearts on the sidewalks for the different people in the neighborhood.

the-together-bookAnd now for dessert. There are wonderful books and stories to read and share together, like Sesame Street The Together Book, or maybe make some popcorn, snuggle on the sofa, and watch a movie. Memories and special events for kids do not have to expensive or elaborate. Eating, playing, and even working together are highlights for them. What will you and your family do together for Valentine’s Day?
