Bubble Activities #11:  Chasing Bubbles Nature Time

In only one generation, children have been separated from Nature. For a simple but magical activity, kids can have some chasing bubbles nature time.

Part of the fun of blowing bubbles is then chasing and trying to catch them. Outside, in a backyard or park, kids will also catch nature. On a calm day, the bubbles may only float a little way until they settle to the ground. Chasing these ones might one be a breeze. On a windy day, the bubbles may float high and fast and kids have to jump and run quickly. Either way, children see Nature in action. A bubble on the ground invites a child to come right up close and also notice the face of nature. Those in the air, call out to kids to share the sky.

Children desperately need time in nature. We all must have a basic relationship with our environment. Whether we live in cities or the wilderness, we live in Nature. It’s our home. The lack of time in nature is impacting children with an increase in obesity and even depression. Natural light is also important for development of eyesight. A connection to nature can decrease stress and anxiety. There are so many ways that it enhances our lives. Not only do we take it for granted, we are failing to include time in nature for our children.

Giving children some soapy water solution and any sort of bubble wand is simple and inexpensive. Even if children are only blowing bubbles from a deck or balcony, they are still interacting with nature.

In a way, it’s a conversation without words as nature replies. In any relationship there is an action and a response. Through blowing and chasing bubbles, there is an interaction between a child and the natural world. Could some chasing bubbles nature time be your child’s play-of-the-day?

Time with Mother Nature for Mothers Day

For Mothers Day, kids will spend time with their moms. Will there be some time with Mother Nature for Mothers Day?

This weekend, some families will make mom a special breakfast. Other families may go out for brunch or dinner. Flowers are very popular for moms too. But how about some nature time?

Instead of breakfast in bed, the family could take mom for a picnic. Muffins, fruit salad, sticky buns, and iced tea are easy to make and pack. Take along a tablecloth, dishes, and a blanket or lawn chairs. If it’s a lunch picnic, you could add in some salads, cold meats, fancy bread or rolls, and yummy desserts. Not on the menu but important nevertheless are hats and sunscreen.

Does Mom have a favorite park or outdoor area? Weeks can be hectic so a walk can be time to unwind. We all need that. Many communities have wonderful gardens full of spring flowers. These may have admission costs so are like a nature present.

A Mothers Day nature adventure might be to go on a wilderness hike or take a boat ride. It’s maybe a little early in the year for outdoor swimming, but could be a good time for beachcombing. Dads aren’t the only ones that like to fish, some moms like to do that too. Especially if someone else cleans and cooks them. A sunny day with a bit of a breeze is great for a bike ride or flying a kite.

Time in nature has so many benefits. Being outside gives energy levels a boost and reduces stress and anxiety. For the body, nature time lowers pulse and blood pressure, and for the brain, it increases calm brain waves. For both children and adults, a connection to nature restores our own nature. We are more creative and positive after being in the nature-zone.

Spending some time with Mother Nature for Mothers Day is a gift for the whole family. What can your family do?

  • A nature hike or walk: This doesn’t need wilderness. It could be just around the neighborhood to see the trees, yards, and sky. Make sure to look down too. Bugs and other creatures hide in grass, dirt, and rocks.
  • Nature soup: While kids and a bit of nature are musts for this soup, any other ingredients are optional, like grass, leaves, twigs, flowers, pine cones, and other nature treasures.
  • Picnic packs: If the weather is okay, pack some yummies and go for a picnic.
  • Blanket forts go outdoors: This needs dry weather so blankets don’t get wet.
  • On a roll: Any grassy hills or spaces in your area for kids to roll in the grass? A close encounter of the grass kind doesn’t need to be out of this world.nature play in grass
  • Magic wands. These are also known by the common name, Sticks. Look for a stick and get to know it.
  • Follow the leader: Choose someone to be a leader and find some nature.
  • I Spy with eyes: I spy with little eyes, something that is blue? white? green? Besides colors, something might be leafy, hard, fluffy, etc.
  • I Spy with ears: Close eyes and listen for some nature sounds.
  • Treasure hunt: Sometimes these are called scavenger hunts. You can either name things for kids to find or pick a number. Kids might be able to find quite a few all in one spot.
